Meier, a 26 year old pending UFA, has been an offensive machine for the Sharks through the last two seasons, producing despite a particularly poor Sharks team. In 39 games this year, Meier has 21 goals and 38 points.
Meier owns an annual contract value of $6M, and with the Leafs tight salary cap situation, it may be difficult to fit in Meier without money going to San Jose, or the Sharks retaining part of his contract.
Friedman went on to reveal that the Leafs had previously wanted add a more physical defenceman, but their great success despite a Muzzin injury has caused them to re-evaluate. With defensive depth now considered a strength, the Leafs could address the void at top-six left wing that's plagued them for years.
Being a premium rental, Meier would carry a heavy cost to acquire via trade, especially with salary retention. Expect the team acquiring Meier to part with a first round draft pick, a roster player, and a high-end prospect. For the Leafs, that could include players like Alex Kerfoot or Justin Holl, and prospects such as Matthew Knies, Nick Robertson, or Topi Niemela.
