The Vancouver Canucks went into free agency with a wish list of players they'd like to add. One of the top players on that list was Ilya Mikheyev. Moments after free agency opened the Canucks inked Mikheyev to a 4-year deal with a cap hit of $4,750,000 per season.

Tonight Mikheyev played his first game in a Canucks jersey. Unfortunately that game didn't go as planned. Mikheyev began the game skating on a line with Elias Pettersson and Andrey Kuzmenko. During the second period Mikheyev absorbed a hit from Nic Meloche and it was clear that Mikheyev was in immediate pain.

Mikheyev got to his feet slowly, skated to the bench and did not return. The Canucks announced shortly after that Mikheyev was finished for the night.

Last season Mikheyev suffered a significant thumb injury during the preseason, which ultimately required surgery. Hopefully for Mikheyev this injury doesn't keep him out of the lineup.
