Damon Severson has been a mainstay in the New Jersey Devils lineup and is at the end of his second contract, signed in 2017-2018.

The defenseman has been consistent in his career in New Jersey, as someone who debuted as a 20-year-old, putting up 17 points his first season and hanging around 20 to 40 points since.

Severson even had an uptick of minutes, as he had 23 TOI on average in 2021-2022, along with putting up 11 goals and 35 assists, which is verifiably his best season in his career.

However, in his career in New Jersey, the defenseman has never a positive +/- in his time in the Garden State.

Is this the first domino to fall that solidifies the end of his time in the Devils system?

Contract negotiations haven't begun, and as Jonas Siegenthaler was the most recent signing, who took a pay cut to help the team who is to say Severson will?

Tom Fitzgerald is actively working on the rebuild and has been successful, aside from the goal-tending situation.

Severson's contract situation could be construed as a negative, for a team who needs assets and Severson isn't who they expected.

With Simon Nemec in the pipeline, it's hard to see where he'll fit in the Devils future plans.
