Veteran enforcer announces his retirement from the NHL
Every players takes a different path to the NHL and once they make it to the NHL players will take different paths to remain in the NHL. That's exactly what veteran defenseman Mark Borowiecki did for his entire NHL career.
Borowiecki was drafted in the 5th round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators. Boro was always considered a longshot to make the NHL, however, that never stopped him. The 6'2, 205 lbs. defender knew that his offensive abilities would never get him to the show. That's why Boro focused on the defensive side of the game and being a physical protector who was never afraid to drop the gloves.
Today Boro finally made the decision to hang up his skates for the very last time. This after 458 career games with 2 different teams. Boro made this announcement on his Instagram page.
Well. I have something to share. After a lot of time, thought, love, and support, have decided that my career as a professional hockey player has come to an end. I am so appreciative of everyone who has helped me along the way. Especially the @senators, where my career began, and the @predsnhl where my career ended.
My loving wife @tara.boro, my family, and my close friends have stood by my side through all of the ups and downs. I am grateful and proud to have shared this life with them. Being able to look up into the stands and see my children watching me is something that will never, ever forget. Having a wife who could come home to, no matter how bad my day been, knowing that she would support and love me is something am eternally grateful for. Without Tara I don't know if would be here today.
There are far too many people who have influenced and guided me along my career to mention in a single post. So I'm not even going to attempt it. Just know that I appreciate each and every one of you. It's my job now to pay that all forward to the next generation of players. l am very excited for a new chapter in the hockey world, and I'm looking forward to finding an opportunity to help grow the game and help other players develop.
A friend of mine who played a long, long time in the NHL asked me when was young player breaking into the league what wanted my legacy to be. He told me that being remembered as a good person and good teammate would always be far more important than any on ice accomplishments. I really hope that have achieved that.
Thanks to everyone!

In his career Boro scored 15 goals and added 41 assists, while proudly earning 848 penalty minutes.
Congratulations Boro on an incredible career. Boro's retirement marks the end of a career for a dying breed in the game. Their are few willing protectors remaining in the game like Mark Borowiecki. Enjoy retirement.
