The play came with just a few seconds on the clock as Red Wings forward Michael Rasmussen was chasing down a loose puck for a chance at the empty net. Even this late in the game the play was critical, as the Red Wings are reportedly interested in bringing in Joel Quenneville if their slow start continues. While that may result in better on-ice performances, few fans around the NHL would stomach such a move given Quenneville's role in the recent Chicago Blackhawks scandal. Additionally, The Red Wings could lose Patrik Kane by the trade deadline if they are not in a playoff position. As such, it is important for the team to bank points as often as they can. Rasmussen's goal sealed the deal in that regard. The hit however, was not well received.
After the hit, Rasmussen stared down Hughes, who was still on the ice, towering over him. The Devils did not appreciate the celebration and a scrum followed.
Fan reaction was understandably mixed. Most fans seemed to agree though that Rasmussen's celebration was very cool. Even Devils fans found a good thing out of it though as many appreciated Hughes' effort to stop the goal even though he had no chance.
With the victory, the Red Wings move to 4-3, good for a tie for 2ns in the Atlantic Division with the Senators and Lightning. It was also the team's 3rd consecutive victory. The Devils moved to 5-4-1 and remain in second in the Metro. The Capitals however, are just one point back with four games in hand.
