The St. Louis Blues put the Edmonton Oilers in a difficult position when they signed both. Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway to 2-year offer sheets. The offer sheets put the team in it even worse position due to the compensation attached to it. The Blues strategically priced the offer sheets for maximum dollars at minimum compensation.
The deal signed by both players fell just $1 below the maximum in their allowed compensation per category. This means for Broberg the Oilers would only be entitled to a second round pick as compensation. While Holloway would only net Edmonton a third round pick in return.
Earlier Sunday the Oilers acquired acquired Vasily Podkolzin from the Vancouver Canucks. The move seemingly put the Oilers into a position where they could potentially allow Holloway to walk to St. Louis.
However, late last night Oilers made the move to send veteran defender Cody Ceci and his $3,250,000 salary along with a 3rd round pick to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Ty Emberson.
While this move doesn't confirmed, the Oilers will match both offer sheets, it definitely puts the team in a better position to be able to do so. With the salary flexibility, the team could now fit both players under the cap if they were able to place Evander Kane on long-term injured reserve. If reports are true, the Oilers intend to announce their decision at some point today.
