The NHL season is barely two weeks old, but it's safe to say that there's going to be many, many highlights throughout the year, as we've already seen some incredible plays, physical moments and some top notch drama. On Tuesday, we saw yet another highlight, as the Minnesota Wild picked up a win over the division rival St. Louis Blues, capping off the 4-1 night with the very rare goalie goal from Filip Gustavsson.
With just 11 seconds left and a 3-1 lead, Gustavsson made a save and saw the perfect opportunity, putting the puck on his stick with a perfect shot that would help him pick up the first goalie goal of the season. Since the year 2000, Gustavsson becomes just the 11th goalie to score a goal at the NHL level, making it the third straight season that this has occurred after Tristan Jarry a year ago and Linus Ullmark the year before.
On top of that, Gustavsson had an incredible night in net, stopping 27 of the 28 shots that he saw on the night, helping the team get back to 2-0-2 on the season with the big Central Division victory. On the season, Gustavsson now has a sub-two GAA on the season, allowing just five goals on 96 shots, with the Wild looking to get back into the Stanley Cup Playoffs once more.
On top of all that great play, Gustavsson now joins a very rare group of goaltenders in the history of the NHL that have managed to score a goal, and given he helped his team to a big victory, it will be one of the best nights of the young goalies career at the NHL level.
