Former Rangers forward Sean Avery has reportedly met with Rangers GM Chris Drury about joining the team this season.

Sean Avery played in 590 career regular-season NHL games, 264 of which came with the New York Rangers.

Despite his small size, he was always known for his physical playstyle and pest-like mentality, hallmarks of Rangers hockey.

Now he could be returning to the team in a new role should Chris Drury decide to pull the plug on head coach Peter Laviolette.

Reportedly, he has already met with Drury in an effort to promote his case as to why he should replace Laviolette behind the bench.

"I have put my name in the hat officially for the head coach position of the New York Rangers. I have my staff already contacted. We've worked out everything, responsibilities... I'm actually thinking about having a co-head coach with Steve Ott."

That being said, fellow former NHLer Paul Bissonnette has said that he believes Avery may be in the running to replace Chris Drury as general manager.

However, NHL reporter Emily Kaplan has noted that Rangers owner James Dolan is still pleased with the job Drury has done.

"The one reporting I did land on though is the owner James Dolan still supports Chris Drury. In fact, James Dolan was aware of that memo Drury sent out last month that has now begun this free fall."

Could this mean that Avery will join the team, but in a coaching role instead?

Certainly, the Rangers will be looking to make another big move in the near future.

They've already shaken up the roster enough after trading Jacob Trouba and Kaapo Kakko, so the next change very well could come with the coaching staff or in the front office.

Whether or not Sean Avery is a part of those plans remains to be seen.
