24-year-old player collapses during the play and struggles to get to his feet
This appears to be news that is happening far too frequently of late. Tuesday in the Finnish Elite League, 24-year-old Miro Nalli of Sport Vaasa collapsed to the ice midway through the 2nd period. Nalli was skaring up the ice when he falls for no clear reason. Prior to him collapsing there was no hit and no other player was near him at the time.
After falling Nalli collapsed he tries to rise to his knees, but is clearly in some form of medical distress. Eventually Nalli manages to get up to his skates and skates to the bench, where he almost collapses again. His teammates quickly grab and steady him. According to multiple reports Nalli was unconscious for several seconds after his fall.
Nalli was rushed to local hospital by ambulance. Reports due indicate he was loaded into the ambulance under his own power, but reports are he refused comment as he was loaded into the ambulance.
After the incident, head coach Risto Dufva gave the following ominous quote.
I don't know what I can tell the outside world about it.
We are extremely careful. We prefer to over-react than under-react.
There are some reports and speculation that Nalli is still feeling the impact of a recent concussion. The reports state he was cleared to return to action too early and this is what caused the collapse, but consider us skeptical.
