Post Media Hockey Columnist, Bruce Garrioch reported Wednesday that the Senators are looking for a top 4 defenseman and a top forward. They are willing to move picks and prospects to make it happen. The 7th overall pick is in play if it will land them a top piece.
Ottawa was 22nd in the league in Goals against per game (3.21) and 26th in the league for goals scored per game (2.73). Not the best recipe for winning in the league. No wonder they are in the market to improve scoring and defense.
In goal the Senators will look for Anton Forsberg to continue his solid play from last season that earned him a three-year extension just before the trade deadline. He went 22-17-4 with a 2.82 GAA and Save % of .917. Their other netminder Matt Murray has struggled mightily in his two seasons with Ottawa, posting a 3.23 GAA and a Save % of just .899 over that stretch. He suffered a concussion back in early March, the third documented one of his career already after having two in quick succession with Pittsburgh. At this point, it's hard to rely on him to provide much even though he has two years left on his contract at a $6.25MM AAV.
For the last few seasons, the Senators have been near the bottom in spending on the cap and near the bottom of the standings. As their young core matures and other veterans are added or brought in to deepen the roster, that's hopefully going to change fast for Senators fans.
