Several NHL players voted to get rid of the shootout
Every year the NHL looks at potential rule changes and during the NHLPA's media tour multiple players were interviewed and shared their thoughts on the current overtime structure. When the NHL abolished ties they opted to add in the shootout to add an element that would excite fans and determine a winner. While fans initially loved the shootout it appears that novelty has worn off.
The NHL opted to implement 3 on 3 overtime after too many games were being decided by a "skills competition". Now players have seemingly fallen in love with the 3 on 3 models. With multiple players voting against the usage of a shootout and simply wanting to continue overtime instead.
I have to agree with these players. While the shootout was once entertaining 3 on 3 hockey is truly more enjoyable to watch. If it were up to me I'd follow the suggestion of the players and simply allow teams to play 3 on 3 until a goal is finally scored. This would allow teams to determine the outcome of the game and not an individual skills competition.
