If you have a major amount of money lying around and you aren't sure what to do with it, here's something to think about. A case of unopened O-Pee-Chee hockey cards from the 1979-80 season are up for auction, and the price has been driven sky high with potential buyers salivating over the possibility of Wayne Gretzky's rookie card.
Gretzky came to the NHL with the Edmonton OIlers from the now defunct World Hockey Association in 1979. He was not eligible for the Calder trophy as Rookie of the Year due to his previous seasons in the WHA. However, his rookie card was still included in the 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee hockey cards series, and now someone is going to end up with a case of unopened cards from that year. To clarify, a case is 16 boxes of cards containing 48 packs each. That 768 packs of unopened cards.
You can view the auction listing by clicking here. At the time of writing this blog, the highest bid was $1,025,000. Additional bids are being made in $25,000 increments.
In case anyone is wondering, yes, these packs include the bubble gum that O-Pee-Chee cards were so famous for. I don't think chewing it would be recommended, but that's your call if you have the money.
