White Rips NHL For Dinosaur Philosophies
The NHL just finished its first Stanley Cup Final with new broadcasters TNT, ESPN and ABC. Unfortunately for the NHL the ratings were pathetic.
The series clinching game, Game 5, featured the worst Stanley Cup Final ratings in 29 years. Only 2.72 million viewers watched the Vegas Golden Knights hoist the Stanley Cup, the lowest figure since 1994 when the New York Rangers defeated the Vancouver Canucks. What isn't reported in those numbers though is the fact that the Rangers/Canucks game was blacked out in New York due to a regional coverage rights issue. There's a good chance that this series was the least watched Stanley Cup Final in modern television history.
The NHL has struggled to properly martlet themselves for years now. The younger generation has access to a plethora of entertainment on the internet and with attention spans getting shorter and shorter, why would they watch an entire 3 hour broadcast when they can catch the highlights on Tik Tok or YouTube.
Successful businessman and multi millionaire Dana White knows how to generate views. White is the President of the UFC, the top mix martial arts organization in the world.
The controversial NELK Boys recently went viral after claiming that the NHL refused to work with them. White came to their defense.
White has been known to say some whacky things over the years, he is a promoter but he's bang on with this one. The NHL is struggling to capture the interest of the younger generation and the released ratings are the proof.
