A former first-round pick has been placed on unconditional waivers in order to start the process of contract termination, the Montreal Canadiens have announced.

A former first-round pick is 24 hours away from being an unrestricted free agent after being placed on unconditional waivers.

On Sunday afternoon, the Montreal Canadiens announced that defenceman Nicolas Beaudin has been placed on unconditional waivers for the purpose of contract termination.

"The Canadiens have placed defenseman Nicolas Beaudin on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract, following a mutual agreement"

Beaudin, 24, was traded to the Montreal Canadiens from Chicago in October 2022, but never appeared in an NHL game for them, instead, spending the last two seasons with AHL Laval.

The Chateauguay, Quebec native was struggling to find minutes on a deep Laval Rocket blue line and reportedly wasn't happy, which led him to mutually agreeing to terminate his contract to pursue other opportunities, potentially overseas.

In 16 games this season with Laval, Beaudin had six assists, six penalty minutes and was a plus-two.

In other related news, the Winnipeg Jets have placed 24-year-old defenceman Declan Chisholm on waivers for the purpose of assigning him to the AHL.

"Placed on NHL waivers today: Declan Chisholm (WPG)." TSN's Chris Johnston said.

The Bowmanville native has only appeared in two games for Winnipeg this season and six AHL games where he has five assists for the Manitoba Moose.
