Turnabout is fair play, as the old saying goes. The last time the Vancouver Canucks and Detroit Red Wings met, there was some controversy over a goal celebration. One of the Canucks got some revenge last night.
Vancouver and Detroit were meeting for the first time since Jake Walman of the Red Wings hit the griddy after scoring the game winner on a penalty shot in overtime.
Some Canucks weren't happy with the celly, calling it disrespectful. Defenceman Nikita Zadorov decided to turn the tables last night as Vancouver was up 4-1 in the game against Detroit. Zadorov and Walman were exchanging some words when they were separated by officials. As Zadorov was skating away, he mocked Walman by hitting a griddy of his own.
This is the kind of thing that can build rivalries and get people talking, which can only be good for the game. At the same time, goal celebrations have been a hot topic in the NHL over the past week after this incident, as well as Ridly Greig of the Ottawa Senators slapping the puck into an empty net during a win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs Morgan Rielly gave him a crosscheck to the head for his actions, which earned Rielly a five game suspension.
