During last nights Toronto Maple Leafs Vs Buffalo Sabres game, a bizarre goal was scored when Maple Leaf defender Mark Giordano scored a goal after the net was knocked off that certainly had people divided.

The play was reviewed, but ultimately was called a good goal, now the National Hockey League has provided an explanation, take a look:

Explanation: The Situation Room initiated a video review to examine if the puck entered the Buffalo net in a legal fashion. Video review determined that the puck crossed the Buffalo goal line between the normal position of the goal posts and that Mark Giordano had an imminent scoring opportunity prior to the goal posts being displaced.

The decision was made in accordance with Rule 63.7, which states, in part, that "In the event that the goal post is displaced, either deliberately or accidentally by a defending player, prior to the puck crossing the goal line between the normal position of the goalposts, the Referee may award a goal. In order to award a goal in this situation, the goal post must have been displaced by the actions of a defending player, the attacking player must have an imminent scoring opportunity prior to the goal post being displaced, and it must be determined that the puck would have entered the net between the normal position of the goal posts.

This one seems pretty cut and dry to me, Buffalo knocked the net off and the puck went in after, as a result of Buffalo knocking the net off, it was ruled a good goal.

However, the puck seems to have gone over one of the net pegs, so there is a possibility, if the net was on, it doesn't fully cross the line.

Next time, if I'm the Sabres, knowing the rule I would try not to knock the net off, or in this case maybe even use a challenge.
