Freddy Andersen gives up one of the worst goals you'll see
Alex Lafreniere has had quite the resurgence of his career during the 20232024 season, and although the goal he scored Saturday night appeared to be sheer dumb luck, it was the lacklustre play of Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Freddie Andersen that had commentators baffled.
Early in the third period, with the Rangers down 3-2, Lafreniere put the puck towards the net while behind it, which caught Andersen off guard. Andersen, who had left a gap between the post and his body, could only watch helplessly as the puck squeaked through him and into the net, tying the game.
It should be no secret that the goaltender must be the most alert player on the ice at all times, but in this case, Lafreniere and his teammates caught the Hurricanes goaltender asleep, allowing them to draw even.
While the Hurricanes ended up winning the contest, if they have any hope of coming back from their 3-1 deficit, they need to put together multiple 60-minute performances because, as it stands now, as seen one slip up, they're golfing by this time next week.
The series has been closer than it appears, now going back to New York for game 5, but Andersen almost cost another coach his job. It's a good thing his team bailed him out.
