The New York Rangers have seen a massive step forward from Alexis Lafreniere, and now they're ready to pay him for it.

In the 2020 NHL Draft, the New York Rangers landed a potential star in Alexis Lafreniere No. 1 overall, but early in his career, it appeared as though he may not live up to the hype. In fact, last summer the organization considered trading the young star, but then he had his breakout campaign, tallying an impressive 28 goals and 57 points in 82 games played, putting him on the right track to be a star in the league.

This year, he started their opener with one goal and one assist, and now insider Frank Seravalli has dropped some major news about the 23-year old.

According to a report from Seravalli, the team are eyeing an extension with the former No. 1 overall pick, one that would pay him $8 million per season over the next eight years. While it may seem like a lot for a 23-year old that hasn't quite proven himself yet, it's clear that he's on the trajectory to be a star in the NHL, and with him expected to hit RFA status next summer, it makes sense that the Rangers are looking to lock him up as soon as they can.

It's unclear at this point if they're looking to get a deal done during the season or if they want to wait until the off-season, but after a great season last year and a fantastic game one of the 2024/25 campaign, there will be plenty of interest in Lafreniere if he hits RFA status, so expect to see them push hard to make a deal as soon as they can.
