For the past two decades, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have been the faces of the Pittsburgh Penguins organization, and after three Stanley Cup wins together, they are considered one of the greatest duos in NHL history. On Wednesday, the two would officially go on to make history together, as they were each on the verge of major milestones heading into a clash with the Buffalo Sabres.
Firstly it was Crosby who recorded the 1,600th point of his career with an assist to Bryan Rust, becoming just the 10th player in league history to hit that mark, and the first in over 13 years since former Penguins superstar Jaromir Jagr.
Along with 593 goals, Crosby is now at 1,602 points and has likely solidified himself as one of the five greatest players the NHL has ever seen, and after a fantastic campaign a year ago, 1,700 and even 1,800 points may not be out of the question.
Then came his All-Star teammate Evgeni Malkin, who would record a goal to officially get him to the 500 mark in his career, becoming just the fourth active player to achieve the feat after his teammate, Steven Stamkos and of course, the Great 8, Alexander Ovechkin.
With over 1,300 points of his own coming into this season, Malkin may be one of the most overlooked players in the modern era, as his greatness has been just as good as Crosby, even if he doesn't get the same acclaim as his captain.
Ultimately, the two would combine for the Overtime winner from Crosby to pick up the 6-5 win over the Buffalo Sabres, with both men being able to celebrate incredible nights together as they look to find one last Stanley Cup run together following two amazing careers.
